At Kass' recommendation, I did a mega workout yesterday. After a week on the road, I needed to shock my body. And it worked well as I felt great and had a wonderful date night with Kass.
While on the treadmill for an hour, I watched the PGA Championship, my least favorite major golf tournament, but its a major nonetheless, which is far better to watch while working out than reruns of Jeffersons or Rachel Ray.
While watching the tournament, I started to think about what I'd do if I were a professional golfer. Well, here's the list:
8. I'd carry 23 balls each tournament. Each would be monogrammed with my Twitter name (@lazerow). The first 5 would be for lost balls or scuffed balls. The others? I'd take the ball I used for the hole and throw it into the crowd. Yes, after each hole. Why? Because no one else does this now. And so that every fan who catches a ball will tell their friends the story and spread my brand for me. Heck, I'd be getting golf balls for free from Titleist as my sponsor. So why not, right?
7. I'd give 10% of my sponsorship money to the main charitable foundation or cause of my sponsors. Win together, lose together, give together. Maybe this would be the difference between going with me versus Tiger? (And the $20M per year price difference!)
6. I'd bring my kids to at least 4 tournaments a year, 5 if I could play my way into the Masters. The first would be the Sony Open in Hawaii. The second would be one of the Florida Swing events so they can go to Disney. The third would be the Tiger Woods tourney in DC, my hometown. And the final one the US Open, the grand championship of them all. Heck, I'd probably rent a killer RV during the summer and travel as a family.
5. I'd help the PGA TOUR figure out their internet strategy. To date it is the single worst internet strategy of any major league and they are leaving big money on the table. They still believe in exclusive content living in one place. They need to unleash the power of the social web.
4. I'd become friends with Stewart Cink (@stewartcink), who has single handedly shown professional athletes how to do Twitter right.
3. I'd stalk Tiger Woods. I'd hang out by his locker. I'd get the spot next to him on the driving range. I'd collect his used bandaids. I'd do whatever I could to learn how he dominates a sport that is so undominatable.
2. I'd play in as many corporate pro ams as possible. The corporate pro ams are a whos who of business and a great way to create connections for the future.
1. I'd take 3 months a year away from the Tour and spend time with Kass and the kids as I practice and get ready for the season.
